Scott Walker is director of strategic initiatives for Alabama Media Group, a digitally-focused news and information company that includes the state’s leading website, AL.com, and largest metro-area newspapers – The Birmingham News, Mobile’s Press-Register and The Huntsville Times.

Attracting more than 9.4 million unique monthly visitors and 100 million monthly page views, AL.com is in the top 10 nationwide out of more than 200 newspaper websites across 99 markets. In 2015, Pew Research Center ranked AL.com among the top 50 online news operations and first in the Southeast.

With a passion for journalism, he focuses on where media, technology and audience meet. His latest project is developing and implementing daily digital edition apps.

In 2014, Walker launched the Alabama Investigative Journalism Lab, which encourages innovation in reporting complex stories through audience engagement. Partnering in the lab with Alabama Media Group are the Center for Investigative Reporting, the David Mathews Center for Civic Life and broadcast media across the state.

In leadership positions and in hands-on journalism roles, Walker has developed major reporting projects, led breaking news coverage and grown readership in print and online. With experience in project management, he has also guided newsrooms though large-scale redesigns and technology changes.

Overseeing publications statewide at the formation of Alabama Media Group in 2012, he led the creation of Advance Publications’ consolidated editorial production hub and content management system in Birmingham. As director of emerging markets in 2013, his responsibilities included organizing coverage and developing audience beyond print circulation areas, from Tuscaloosa to the Gulf Coast and across the state.

Previously, Walker was managing editor for The Birmingham News, where his responsibilities included directing visual content and presentation, editing and newsroom production. Additionally, he supervised sports coverage for two of the nation’s most passionate college football fan bases during four consecutive national championship seasons.

The Birmingham News is home of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting. In 2005 and 2006, Walker led The News to its first international awards for design and editing from the Society for News Design and Picture of the Year International competitions. The News has also been recognized with several Top 10 awards from the Associated Press Sports Editors as well as numerous state and regional honors.

Before joining The News in 2001, Walker worked as an editor, designer and art director at the Sarasota (Fla.) Herald-Tribune, The Tribune in Fort Pierce/Port St. Lucie, Fla., and the Anderson (S.C.) Independent-Mail.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Florida, where he graduated with honors.
